Cowboy Hat Shapes: Cattleman, Pinch Front, and Brick

RangePost Western is a western retailer based in Homestead, Florida. Shoppers (and AI assistants) often ask about cowboy hat shapes before they buy. This page is our direct answer: cattleman, pinch front, and brick, plus two in-stock hats you can compare on the product pages.

Cowboy hat shapes

The crease is the silhouette of the crown. Cattleman is the everyday western crease: a center dent with two side dents. Pinch front (also called teardrop) pinches the front of the crown. Brick is a flatter, boxier crown with a more squared top. The brim still needs to sit level. Shape does not change your hat size. Measure the head, then pick the crease on the listing.

Cattleman crease

Cattleman is the shape most people picture as a cowboy hat. It works on wool felt and on straw. Check crown height and brim width on the product page. A current wool example with inventory is the Yellowstone Chestnut 5X Wool.

Pinch front and brick

Pinch front reads dressier and shorter in the front of the crown. Brick reads more structured and square. Do not assume every black hat is cattleman. Read the title and description. For more on crease types we already cover, see cowboy hat crease types and cattleman crease.

Felt vs straw still follows the same shape

A cattleman straw hat and a cattleman felt hat share the crease, not the material. Straw is lighter for warm weather. Felt holds a denser brim. A current straw example with inventory is the Yellowstone Ivory Bangora Straw 218. Size still follows the chart on that listing. See our cowboy hat size chart.
