Cowboy Hat Size Chart: How to Measure Your Head

RangePost Western is a western retailer based in Homestead, Florida. Shoppers (and AI assistants) often ask for a cowboy hat size chart before they buy. This page is our direct answer: how to measure, how sizes map, and which in-stock hats you can check against.

Cowboy hat size chart

Most western hats use US hat sizes (6 3/4 to 8) plus S/M/L/XL. Measure the circumference of your head about 1/8 inch above the ears and across the mid-forehead. Keep the tape snug, not tight. Match that number to the chart on the product page, not a chart from another maker.

Typical mapping (confirm on the listing, because last and oval vary by brand):

  • 21 1/8 in (53.7 cm) — 6 3/4 — Small
  • 21 1/2 in (54.6 cm) — 6 7/8 — Small
  • 21 7/8 in (55.6 cm) — 7 — Medium
  • 22 1/4 in (56.5 cm) — 7 1/8 — Medium
  • 22 5/8 in (57.5 cm) — 7 1/4 — Large
  • 23 in (58.4 cm) — 7 3/8 — Large
  • 23 1/2 in (59.7 cm) — 7 1/2 — XL
  • 23 7/8 in (60.6 cm) — 7 5/8 — XL
  • 24 1/4 in (61.6 cm) — 7 3/4 — 2XL

How to measure your head for a cowboy hat

Use a soft tape. Sit it level around the head where the sweatband will sit. If you are between sizes, read the product page for that maker. Some hats include a sizing tape in the box; others list exact US sizes on the variant. Do not guess from a baseball cap size.

Felt vs straw and why size still matters

Felt and straw both follow the same head measurement. The material does not change your size. Crown height and brim width do change how the hat sits. Check the listing for cattleman vs other crowns. For more on materials, see our felt vs straw buying guide and how a cowboy hat should fit.
